The UK’s largest territorial insect, Stag Beetles live underground as larvae for years before emerging as adults to mate. The adults only live for a few weeks and don’t eat – they use their stored fat to survive!

They are most likely to be seen from May to August when the adults emerge and look for mates. Males can actually fly to look for females, and will fight over mates, using their antler-like jaws in a similar way to how stags fight over females.

Despite the size of their jaws, they are relatively weak and are not dangerous to humans.

Stag beetle populations are declining, and dead wood is an important habitat for them.

The larvae depend on decaying wood that is partially buried in the ground. To help this species, you can make a stag beetle loggery in your garden. Stack logs of wood vertically (like organ pipes), and partially bury them in the ground (approx 50cm deep). If possible build the loggery in partial shade so that it doesn’t dry out.
