Hedgehogs are mammals that are covered in 5000-7000 tiny spikes called “spines”. These spines are actually modified hairs and are made of keratin – just like our hair and fingernails!

Hedgehogs can travel up to 1 mile each night looking for food, nesting sites, and mates.

They mainly eat beetles, caterpillars, slugs, snails and worms. They are actually lactose intolerant, so please don’t put milk out for them! Instead, a shallow dish of fresh water will be very appreciated.

Hedgehogs protect themselves by rolling into a ball when threatened.

Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets.

If you see a hedgehog during daylight, it is often a sign that they are ill and injured, unless they are moving with purpose gathering nesting material or having a drink. Contact Wildlife Aid if you think you have found an ill or injured hedgehog.

Hedgehog populations are seriously declining, due to urban development and increased use of pesticides. You can help hedgehogs by making a 13x13cm hole in your garden fence to allow hedgehogs to safely move between gardens. You can also make leaf or log piles to attract their insect food and provide them with nesting sites. Please ensure that ponds have escape ramps, avoid using chemicals in your garden, and don’t leave netting (such as football goal netting or fruit netting) at ground height – raise it up by 30cm. Please also check long grass for hedgehogs before strimming.

If you want to see if there have been any hedgehog sightings near you, or want to record one of your own, do so here!
