Urban road verges are often overlooked when discussing urban greenspaces. However, they can contain significant biodiversity, contribute to connectivity between other green spaces, and due to their proximity to road traffic are well placed to improve air quality. Richmond Council recently changed their mowing regimes on several highway verges – but will this make a difference to their biodiversity value?

Richmond Council and Habitats & Heritage are recruiting volunteers to take part in a monitoring programme of our local roadside verges. The scheme will include full training and is suitable for complete beginners as well as people with some wildflower identification experience. Before monitoring a verge in their neighbourhood, volunteers complete a one day training course, either on 14th or 21st July from 10 am to 5 pm at Ham Library.

If you are interested in becoming a road verge citizen scientist, please get in touch at biodiversity@habitatsandheritage.org.uk
